Zilpha Keatley Snyder’s Newbery Honor Award-winning book, “The Egypt Game,” was originally published in 1967 and has since become a captivating classic for young readers from ages eight to twelve. It tells of several creative youths who share a fascination with ancient Egyptian history and conjure a whimsical game that includes secret meetings, rituals and costumes based on ancient culture's customs. When this imagined world collides with real-world murder and mystery, the children participating in the Egypt Game band together and, in doing so, become closer friends. The first character introduced in “The Egypt Game” is April Hall, an eleven-year-old girl recently transplanted to California to live with her grandmother at the Casa Rosada apartments. She’s a smart young girl; however, she sometimes veils her intelligence with snobbery and superficial preoccupations. For example, April constantly wears fake eyelashes and insists on wearing her blond hair in an upswept bun. However, this superficiality could be in part a safeguard, as April is insecure and accustomed to other children not liking her -- an outlook that eventually changes after meeting her neighbor, Melanie.
Marshall is Melanie’s four-year-old younger brother, who is incredibly advanced for a young boy of his age. However, he relies on an essential crutch throughout the story that belies his true age -- Security, his pet stuffed octopus doll whose naming is not coincidental. Marshall’s easygoing attitude makes him an active participant in the early development of April and Melanie’s Egypt Game, even serving as Pharaoh.
He is also notably observant. For example, he is the only character to notice at first that the Professor is watching them from his shop window. The Professor is first positioned as a brooding, mysterious character who is tall and somewhat hidden behind a long mustache and robust eyebrows. He owns a small store known as the A-Z Antique and Curio Shop, from which he watches the children as they commence their Egypt Game in the adjacent storage lot and appropriate his cast-off replicas of ancient Egyptian artifacts.
When a young girl is murdered, some blame the aloof Professor. Fortunately, the end of the book reveals his good-heartedness.
The Professor saves April from the true murderer’s attack and shortly after divulges that he had been secretly encouraging the Egypt Game’s participants all along.
